EXCLUSIVE: Amazon Studios has won a heated auction among four other studios and streamers for a Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston comedy vehicle. The untitled body swap comedy was pitched last week by Max Barbakow, who will write and direct the film. LuckyChap Entertainment, the production label of Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara, will produce alongside Roberts and her Red Om Films banner, Anistonâs Echo Films, and Barbakow. He is best known for directing Palm Springs, the Andy Samberg-Cristin Milioti 2020 comedy won by Neon and Hulu at Sundance for a then-festival record sum. The comedy is based on his original pitch.
The appetite for a two-hander star vehicle comes after the surprise box office success of Ticket to Paradise, the comedy that re-teamed Roberts with George Clooney. For Amazonâs Jennifer Salke and Head of Movies Julie Rapaport, this signals an uptick in Amazon stepping up to bolster its film slate.
Amazon was in the bidding for the Sundance hot title Flora and Son, and won the auction for Red Shirt, a Simon Kinberg pitch that Channing Tatum will star in for director David Leitch , and before that the Nick Stoller-helmed wedding comedy to star Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell.
CAA handled the auction, and it is further evidence that star packages that can be fast tracked and slotted into release schedules is the best way to get top dollar. By the time the Roberts and Aniston comedy gets made, Iâm told that each actress will hit a payday high water mark, counting salary and backend buyout.
Roberts is repped by CAA and Hirsch Wallerstein; Aniston is CAA, Lighthouse Management, and Hansen Jacobson; Barbakow is CAA, Range Media Partners, and Jim Gilio and Jonathan Sauer at Sloan, Offer; and LuckyChap is CAA, Entertainment 360, and attorney Jeff Bernstein.

Jennifer Aniston’s vintage John Galliano for Christian Dior gown topped a star-studded new poll
While Jennifer isn’t up for any nominations at this year’s Golden Globes, she’s no stranger to the prestigious ceremony.
In 2020, the 52-year-old was nominated for Best Actress for her role in The Morning Show. The award went to Olivia Colman for her portrayal of the Queen in The Crown.
While the past year has been different for everyone, Jennifer has now been able to return to work to start filming the second series of The Morning Show.
On Friday, the award-winning star shared a behind-the-scenes photo of herself making a coffee in the kitchen on set.
The star is also getting ready to reunite with her Friends co-stars for the much-anticipated reunion show. Due to the pandemic restrictions, the show has been repeatedly delayed, but it was revealed earlier in the month that the cast has began filming for it.
Directed by Anne Fletcher, DUMPLINâ follows an outspoken plus-sized teenage girl named Willowdean (Danielle Macdonald), whoâs known as Will to her friends and Dumplinâ to her mother (Jennifer Aniston), a former beauty queen who now runs the local Miss Teen Blue Bonnet pageant. In her small Texas town, Will confidently ignores comments about her weight and listens to Dolly Parton songs obsessively. But when she decides to enter her motherâs pageant in protest, her bold move encourages other contestants to follow in her footsteps, redefining the townâs traditions in the process.

Netflix has bought Jennifer Anistonâs comedy âDumplin,’â and plans to release the film on the streaming platform later this year in the U.S. and select international territories.
âDumplin’â will also be released in select U.S. theaters. Danielle Macdonald stars alongside Odeya Rush, Dove Cameron, Harold Perrineau, Bex Taylor-Klaus and Ginger Minj.
Anne Fletcher directed from a script by Kristin Hahn, based on Julie Murphyâs novel. Dolly Parton has recorded new versions of her songs with collaborators such as Sia and Miranda Lambert, in addition to six new original songs co-written by Parton and Linda Perry. Michael Costigan, Mohamed AlRafi, Hahn, and Trish Hofmann produced. AlRafi produced through 50 Degrees Entertainment. Aniston and Danny Nozell executive produced.
The story centers on a confident teen girl â named Dumplinâ by her former beauty queen mom (Aniston) â taking a job at the local fast-food joint. She meets a former jock whom she likes and he seems to like her back, but when she begins to doubt herself, she sets out to take back her confidence by entering a beauty pageant and gaining respect for her mother.
Variety first reported in 2015 that Disney acquired the movie rights preemptively prior to publication of Murphyâs Texas-set novel with Costigan producing. Disney decided not to go ahead with the project.
Macdonald broke out as the star of the 2017 Sundance drama âPattiCake$.â Fletcherâs directing credits include âHot Pursuit,â âThe Guilt Trip,â âThe Proposal,â and â27 Dresses.â
News of the Netflix deal was first reported by the Hollywood Reporter.
